LACTOBACILLUS STRAINS REDUCE CHOLESTEROL
Lactobacillus strains (pro-biotics) have been found to be effective in reducing cholesterol levels. 3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutarylcoenzyme
A reductase (HMGCR) is the essential enzyme in cholesterol production in humans. The HMGCR catalyses the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonic acid in the production of cholesterol, representing the rate limiting step.
Lactobacillus strains have been shown to reduce HMGCR gene expression. In a study utilising strain specific probiotics, the combination of Lactobacillus plantarum 299v and Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07 decreased circulating leptin levels by 41%, reduced myocardial infarcts (heart artery blockages) by 29% and supported greater recovery of post-ischemic mechanical function (blood blockage) by 23%, thus demonstrating how probiotics can improve cardiovascular health.
