Pins and needles in the hands are a common symptom for many people and differential diagnosis needs to be applied. What this means is that many conditions can cause pins and needles in the hands or fingrers.
I will try and cover the most common causes. It’s important to test and determine the causes as the treatment differs.
Pins and needles are experienced from pressure on nerves. So, which nerves and where on the length of the nerve is the pressure.
If experiencing pins and needles in the hands then the points of interest are the neck, elbow and the wrist.
The neck area is common as a vertebra misalignment will cause pressure depending on where the pins in needles are the fingers determine the level of the spinal problem. A few quick treatment sessions to restore proper movement to the neck corrects the problem.
The elbow area is an area usually affected by trauma and bruising of the nerve. Termed the “funny bone”, the elbow means the nerve is very exposed at the tip and if accidently knocked you can bruise the nerve and the pins and needles can take up to a few days to resolve. Icing the elbow for 5 mins twice a day can help speed the lessening of the pins and needles.
The wrist area is usually called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. If the wrist area endures repeated trauma then the ligaments slacken and inflammation sets in and puts pressure on the carpal tunnel area. Repeated trauma can be if you are an electrician using your hands and twisting the wrist or other manual activities. If both hands are experiencing pins and needles then it can be a general inflammatory condition and the swelling putting pressure on the wrist area and in the body and we have to determine if to refer you to another doctor. For example, one of those conditions that can cause swelling of the whole body are hormonals changes in females.
Most of these causes of pins and needles in the hands can be treated with Chiropractic care without serious interventions or drugs.
