The most common complaint in a chiropractor’s office today is neck pain as we sit mostly and do less manual physical work. The extended sitting position does create excessive muscle contraction against gravity to maintain the incorrect posture. The best postures for the spine are standing or lying flat. Any other posture is a strain on the muscles and ligaments. After some time the muscles and ligaments start complaining and give you discomfort.
Injuries to the spine can also occur, as in sporting injuries, car accidents and falls. The management of these injuries is much easier than postural problems discussed above. The examination of the cervical spine (neck) involves examining the posture (shape), neurological (nerve) tests, ligament mobility testing (range of motion), and muscle test strength. These results indicate where the specific spinal adjustment will be administered and if other supporting exercises or ice and heat are needed.
